In Madagascar: We will be on multiple reserves and up to 11 species of Lemur may be found in some locations, including the Grey Bamboo Lemur, Common Brown Lemur, Diademed Sifaka, Black & White Ruffed Lemurs, and the Indri indri lemur. Also, we’lll see many bird species including the Velvet Asity, the Blue Coua and the Nuthatch Vanga (and more!) AND reptiles, amphibians and invertebrates plus many unique orchid species.
In Search of “The Shy Five” at The Great Karoo– We will spend five days/four nights searching for rarely seen critters found in this ecosystem. You!ve heard of the “Big Five” and the “Little Five”. Our primary targets in the Karoo are “The Shy Five” which include: the Aardwolf, Aardvark, Bat eared Fox, Porcupine and Meerkat.
Also, on the sight-seeing list are the Cape Fox, Striped Polecat and Striped Weasel.
There are many African animals we’ll also see while on this journey, including: hippos, mongoose, hopefully a pangolin (very rare), Rock Hydrax, Hartebeest, Wildebeest, different antelope, Reedbuck, Steenbok, Gemsbok, Springbok and much more (including birds and reptiles) in an ecosystem without the large predators (missing lions, leopards, cheetahs, & hyenas.)

Madagascar is know for its Lemurs, and rightly so: There are over 111 species of Lemurs with new ones still being discovered in this untamed land.
Lemurs survive in both rainforests and deserts. They differ, including by size, in what they eat, when they are active, how they socialize and where they live on the island. We!ll search for them in two prime areas!
It is also home to over 300 bird species, a unique and colorful variety of chameleons and frogs, 303 species of butterflies and moths, and a very unusual mammal called the Tenrec!
The Great Karoo is a vast arid to semi-arid region in central South Africa. This desert wilderness area is often overlooked by those who visit South Africa. We’ll spend five days/four nights searching for rarely seen critters found in this ecosystem. You’ve heard of the “Big Five” and the “Little Five”. Our primary targets in the Karoo are “The Shy Five” which include: the Aardwolf, Aardvark, Bat-Eared Fox, African Porcupine and Meerkat.
Day 1 - Wednesday, July 1 - Johannesburg to Antananarivo
You likely will have arrived yesterday, on Tuesday, June 30th. Today, we will Fly Johannesburg to Antananarivo (Madagascar’s capitol) on scheduled flight, transfer to Hotel, program briefing & dinner. We will be staying at the Relais des Plateaux Hotel.
Antananarivo, often abbreviated as Tana, is the capital city of Madagascar. It is the largest city in the country and serves as its political, economic, and cultural center. Located in the central highlands, Antananarivo is characterized by its hilly terrain and historical architecture.
The city offers a blend of traditional Malagasy culture and modern amenities. Notable attractions include the Rova of Antananarivo –a royal palace complex (pictured below); Avenue of Independence, a bustling area with shops and cafes; and the Tsimbazaza Zoo, which features local wildlife.
Antananarivo is also a gateway for exploring the rest of Madagascar, making it an essential stop for travelers interested in discovering the unique biodiversity and scenic beauty of the island.

Day 2- Thursday, July 2 - Tsarasaotra Park, Peyrieras Reserve & Andasibe Reserve
AM Half day guided visit of RAMSAR site at Tsarasaotra Park in Antananarivo.
Tsarasaotra Park, also known as the Tsarasaotra Private Park, is a unique urban bird sanctuary located in Antananarivo, Madagascar. It is one of the few private parks in the world designated as a Ramsar site, recognizing its importance as a wetland of international significance.
The park offers a safe haven for various bird species, including several endemic and endangered species. Birdwatchers can spot species such as the Madagascar pond heron, the Meller’s duck, and the Madagascar kingfisher. The tranquil setting with its lake and lush greenery makes it a peaceful retreat within the bustling city.
Tsarasaotra Park is a valuable conservation area, providing opportunities to observe Madagascar’s unique avian life while contributing to the protection of these species and their habitat. It is an excellent spot for nature enthusiasts visiting Antananarivo.

Peyrieras Reserve, also known as the Peyrieras Reptile Reserve or Peyrieras Madagascar Exotic, is a renowned wildlife reserve located near Marozevo, about 75 km east of Antananarivo, Madagascar. The reserve was founded by the French entomologist and naturalist André Peyrieras.
The Peyrieras Reserve is celebrated for its impressive collection of reptiles and amphibians, including chameleons, geckos, frogs, and snakes. It also houses insects, including various species of butterflies and moths, and several species of lemurs. Visitors have the opportunity to see up-close interactions with some of Madagascar’s fascinating endemic wildlife in a relatively small area.
The reserve is structured with several enclosures that simulate natural habitats, providing a safe environment for the animals while educating visitors about Madagascar’s unique biodiversity. Then on to Andasibe Reserve to search for the world’s largest lemur, the Indri indri.
Andasibe Reserve, also known as Andasibe-Mantadia National Park, is one of Madagascar’s most popular and accessible national parks. Located about 150 km east of Antananarivo, it comprises two main areas: the Analamazaotra Special Reserve and the Mantadia National Park.
Andasibe Reserve is best known for its dense rainforest and rich biodiversity, particularly its population of indri, the largest living lemur species. Visitors can hear the distinctive calls of the indri echoing through the forest, making for a memorable experience. The park is also home to other lemur species, reptiles, amphibians, and a variety of bird species.
The reserve offers several well-marked trails for hiking and guided tours, ranging from easy to challenging, allowing visitors to explore the lush landscape and encounter its diverse wildlife. Additionally, the park features a variety of plants, including impressive orchids and ferns.

Day 3 - Friday, July 3 - Perinet Analamazaotra Reserve
Early breakfast, off to the Perinet Analamazaotra Reserve a short distance to the north to search for lemurs. There are 11 species that may be found in this reserve, including the Grey Bamboo Lemur, Common Brown Lemur, Diademed Sifaka, Black & White Ruffed Lemurs, and the Indri indri lemur. Also, we’ll see many bird species including the Velvet Asity, the Blue Coua and the Nuthatch Vanga (and more!) AND reptiles, amphibians and invertebrates plus many unique orchid species.

Day 4 - Saturday, July 4 - Mitsinjo Forest Reserve
Andasibe-Antananarivo: After breakfast, a visit to the Mitsinjo Forest Reserve, a private NGO that operates a captive amphibian breeding facility.
You’ll have the opportunity to plant an indigenous species along the reforestation trail to support the rain forest.
Mitsinjo Forest Reserve is a community-run conservation area located adjacent to Andasibe-Mantadia National Park in eastern Madagascar. The reserve was established by the local Association Mitsinjo, which focuses on biodiversity conservation, research, and ecotourism.
The forest reserve is well-known for its rich biodiversity, including several species of lemurs, such as the indri, diademed sifaka, and common brown lemur. It also boasts a variety of reptiles, amphibians, and bird species, making it a prime spot for wildlife enthusiasts.

Day 5 - Sunday, July 5 - Anjajavy Reserve
Antananarivo to Anjajavy via private air charter.
Anjajavy Reserve is a private nature reserve located on the northwest coast of Madagascar, approximately 120 km north of the city of Mahajanga. It spans about 750 hectares and is part of Anjajavy L’Hotel, an exclusive luxury eco-lodge that offers a unique blend of conservation and luxury tourism.

Day 6 - Monday, July 6 - Anjajavy Reserve

Day 8 - Wednesday, July 8 - Historical Sites of Antananarivo

Optional afternoon visit to extraordinary historical sites in Antananarivo (The Royal Hill of Ambohimanga is a UNESCO World Heritage site and home to a royal palace, tombs and sacred sites from the Merina monarchy which ruled Madagascar for several centuries)

Day 9 - Thursday, July 9 - Departure for Johannesburg
Morning departure for Johannesburg, overnight at Africa Sky Guest House. (Depending on arrival time some not going on the optional Great Karoo expedition extension may choose to depart for home without adding a night – they will arrive in USA Day 10).
Day 10 - Friday, July 10 - Post-Trip to Great Karoo or Home
If you are returning Home –> Those spending the additional night before returning home will have fee for room and food and will be transferred to depart from OR Tambo International Airport late afternoon or evening (depending on carrier). We can offer an optional day trip to the Cheetah Center north of Johannesburg (there is an additional entrance and transportation fee) with return in the late afternoon to connect with evening/night flights home with arrival in USA on Day 11, Saturday, July 11.

After spending the night at African Sky Guest House on Day 9 (Thursday, July 9) we’ll transfer to a local airport and fly a charter to the Khoisan KAROO, a vast arid to semi-arid region in central South Africa. This desert wilderness area is often overlooked by those who visit South Africa. Wd’lll spend five days/four nights searching for rarely seen critters found in this ecosystem. You!ve heard of the “Big Five” and the “Little Five”. Our primary targets in the Karoo are “The Shy Five” which include: the Aardwolf, Aardvark, Bat-Eared Fox, Porcupine and Meerkat.
Also, on the sight-seeing list but not one of “The Shy Five” are the Cape Fox, Striped Polecat and Striped Weasel.

Day 14- Tuesday, July 14 - Return To J'Burg and connect home
Return charter flight to Johannesburg and choices follow:
(1) connect to your late international flights home at OR Tambo International Airport. The non-stop flights directly to the USA from Johannesburg usually depart early to late evening depending on your carrier. You need to decide before booking your flights whether you’ll overnight on Tuesday, July 14 in Johannesburg (with a fee for room and food) or simply connect to a night flight. We expect to return from the Karoo in the afternoon. We’re working on our preference to return from the Karoo directly to OR Tambo which would make the connection to international flights easier. However, we may be forced to return to a regional airport and be transported via vehicle to OR Tambo and your connecting to flight home. If you choose to return the USA on Tuesday July 14th, you’ll arrive home on Day 15, (Wednesday, July 15) depending on the flight you book, of course!
(2) Or overnight at African Sky Guest House on Tuesday July 14 with extra fee for room and meals and take flights back to the USA (or other destinations you’ve selected ) on Wednesday, July 15 and arrive in USA Thursday, July 16.
Day 15, Wednesday, July 15— If you decided on an extra night at African Sky (Choice #2 above) or another hotel and a late flight back to the USA on Monday, we can offer you an optional trip to the cheetah center north of Johannesburg (transport and admissions fee TBD). Return would be to African Sky or to OR Tambo depending on time.

This is our preferred method of payment. It’s easy, immediate and there are NO fees to you or us!!
You’ll need to sign up with your bank for Zelle (easy with our bank’s online platform and only takes about 3 minutes online). Look under “pay” or “pay and transfer.”

You may use a credit card, and we’ll add 3.5% to partially cover cc fees associated with processing.

You absolutely should get Travel Insurance. We have worked with Travelex and Travel Guard in the past, but there are many choices. We will ask for your Travel Insurance information prior to the trip (should there be an issue and we need to contact them.)
